The Glen Cove InterAgency Council held its monthly membership meeting on Wednesday, March 11 at the Glen Cove Library.  Library Director Antonia Petrash and Dr. Schenker, Principal of Glen Cove Hig

h School served as this month’s guest speakers.  The theme of this meeting was outreach, with both the Glen Cove Library and Glen Cove Schools expressing the many ways that they are adjusting to the current economic situation and offering services that will help members of our community during these difficult times.

The mission of the library is to provide both adults and students within the community access to historical and current information as avenues for research and study.  A combination of traditional research methods, a skilled professional staff and access to new technology contribute to the library’s high degree of accessibility.  Among the many resources that the library provides is remote service from home.  This virtual library gives members full access to historical and medical resources, references and almanacs.  The library works hard to bring the best quality literature to the community as they serve many individuals who do not have ESL or a home computer.  Residents can easily utilize the free services of the library, either at home or inside the facility, and in fact many are taking advantage of this opportunity to work on resumes, conduct career-related research or expand upon their current skills.

In the spirit of cooperation and collaboration, the Glen Cove School district is moving ahead to the future through a team effort to address the ongoing needs of students.  Dr. Schenker presented an informative picture of the many ways in which the IAC and School District can collaborate to bring new opportunities to our youth.  The InterAgency Council, which has met regularly to identify and address the changing needs of the community, is particularly interested in contributing to collaborative efforts in education as a means of targeting the youth of the community.

Glen Cove Schools are working hard to prepare students for their future careers and, under the guidance of Dr. Schenker and Dr. Camhi, Glen Cove High School has begun to implement a series of creative programs to find new and better ways to achieve this result.  The IAC has offered to assist the school in their effort to provide internship experiences for students to explore their interest in potential career field by providing career contacts from each of the member organizations.  The IAC will also collaborate with Glen Cove High School on the Community Service Program, offering a list of local organizations that are willing and able to accept volunteers.   In addition, the IAC member agencies have volunteered to serve as guest speakers for the career academy, a program that helps students to find their passion and cultivate their creative instincts.  Several InterAgency Council members have offered to join an oversight committee that offers suggestions on desirable career skills and well as evaluates the success of the new programs.  The goal of these efforts is to give our students all of the skills that they will need to be marketable when they graduate, and maximize their chances of obtaining a job in their desired field.

The InterAgency Council brings a new outlook and fresh ideas to the vast array of community service agencies throughout the City.  The next InterAgency Council Meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 8, 2009 at the Finley Middle School.
