The InterAgency Council of Glen Cove held its monthly membership meeting on Wednesday, May 13, 2009 at the Marquis Nursing and Care Center. Administrator Patty Greenberg served as both host and guest speaker at this meeting, providing an overview of Marquis Nursing and Care Center and detailing the services provided to patients.

Following her presentation, IAC President Sharon Harris was pleased to honor Carol Waldman, Executive Director of the Glen Cove Senior Center and Vice President of IAC. Mrs. Waldman was recently named a “2009 Woman of Distinction” by the Nassau County Legislature. It was with great pride that Dr. Harris presented Carol Waldman with a citation from the InterAgency Council in recognition of her outstanding commitment to serving the senior community. Dr. Harris thanked Carol for all that she continues to do to further the mission of the IAC, collaborating with a variety of organizations to bring the best possible services to seniors.

Cathy Samuels, Pride Project Coordinator for SAFE, Inc. concluded the meeting with a presentation on the “Parents Who Host Lose the Most” media campaign, sponsored by SAFE Inc. and the Glen Cove Police Department. These agencies were awarded two grants from the Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services to combat underage drinking in Glen Cove. They will seek to educate parents through a mass media campaign about the health and safety risks of serving alcohol at teen house parties and increase awareness, compliance and enforcement of Glen Cove’s Social Host Law. “Parents Who Host Lose the Most” will run through August, encompassing prom and graduation season. The campaign is now in full swing, the City Council has adopted a Prevention Mission Statement and a Community Leaders breakfast was held at City Hall to empower ambassadors within the community to deliver the health and safety message. The campaign will coordinate with IAC, North Shore Clergy, Business Districts, Parent-Teacher Organizations and community volunteers. “Parents Who Host Lose the Most” will also collaborate with the school district to sent informational mailings, hold a “Reach Out Now Teach In” led by Councilman Tony Jimenez and offer a “Choices and Consequences Program” through the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office. All are invited to participate in Family Awareness Day on Saturday, June 27 from 1pm to 4pm at Morgan Park.

Representing the cultural, religious, and ethnic diversity of Glen Cove, the Inter Agency Council has met regularly to identify and address the changing needs of the community. This networking among social and human service community organizations has resulted in numerous projects and collaborations which continue to benefit the citizens of Glen Cove. The next InterAgency Council Meeting will be held on Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at the Glen Cove Youth Center.
