Glen Cove InterAgency Council Holds Year Opening Meeting

IAC meeting 20090909

On Wednesday, September 9, 2009 the Glen Cove InterAgency Council kicked off what promises to be an exciting and eventful year with its first membership meeting at Glen Cove City Hall.  Agency representatives gathered together for the first time since June to recognize the achievements of last year, share updates on their own organizations and make plans and goals for how IAC member agencies can continue to collaborate to benefit Glen Cove and its residents.

The room was filled to capacity as InterAgency Council President Dr. Sharon Harris offered a warm welcome to all in attendance.  The IAC looks forward to visiting a variety of member agencies at their own locations this year, enabling members to learn more about the services provided by each of these organizations.  This monthly coordination and information exchange amongst human and social service agencies is what makes the Glen Cove InterAgency Council such an effective organization.  With comprehensive knowledge of other agencies, their services and locations, IAC members can easily direct individuals in need to the appropriate place.

This month, the InterAgency Council was pleased to host Mayor Ralph V. Suozzi as the featured guest speaker.  Mayor Suozzi addressed the group, thanking them for inviting him to speak and reiterating that the IAC is one of his favorite organizations.  Mayor Suozzi expressed that the ideal government operates in a way that encourages communication and coordination and his administration has worked hard to implement the goals and methods that he shares with the IAC.  Mayor Suozzi always welcomes the opportunity to speak to this group at the first meeting of each year, and he opened the floor to questions by agency representatives.

The Mayor gave an overview of the current state of the City, touching on a variety of projects and studies that the City is involved in. From the Waterfront Project to the Ferry Project to the Master Plan, the Mayor provided an update on the progress that the City has made.  Although we are in tough times nationally, the City is on a steady path to recovery.  As investment in the future of Glen Cove, quality of life is a daily focus for the Mayor.  The major concerns of residents – sidewalks, curbs and roads are currently being addressed.  The Mayor was also proud to announce the new children’s playground that will soon be installed at Stanco Park.  Mayor Suozzi welcomed agency representatives to contact him at any time with questions or concerns, and he encouraged them to continue their cooperative relationship, not only amongst social service agencies, but also with City government, so that we can continue to effectively provide services to our residents.

Dr. Vogrin stated that he and Dr. Harris participate as co-convenors on the County Executive’s No Wrong Door strategic planning team. The purpose of these planning sessions is to maximize resources and enhance delivery of services to the County’s vulnerable citizens in Nassau’s high-risk communities.  The IAC supports the County Executive’s plan and is in a favorable position to do so as it is an already established organization with not for profit status and a thirty year history of community collaboration and coordination.

Representing the cultural, religious and ethnic diversity of Glen Cove, the InterAgency Council has met regularly to identify and address the changing needs of the community.  This networking among social and human service community organizations has resulted in numerous projects and collaborations which continue to benefit the residents of Glen Cove.  For more information on how to become a member, contact 516-676-2008.  Visit the website www.iacglencove.org for the upcoming meeting schedule.
