IAC Publishes New Directory of Local Services

The IAC's end of the year meeting was opened by IAC president Dr. Daniel Vogrin, executive director of the Melillo Center for Mental Health by thanking Dr. Ellenmorris Tigerman, executive director and Toya Davis of the School for Language & Communication Development for hosting the annual holiday meeting. Toya Davis was invited by Dr. Vogrin to briefly highlight the services of the school to the IAC membership in attendance. The school's services include: educational programming for infants, pre-school and school age children with and without disabilities. Therapeutic and occupational therapies, development and psychological evaluations, parent education and training's classes are just some of the programs offered.

Following the approval of the minutes and the treasurer's report, the committee reports were heard. Juan Castro, executive director of the Glen Cove Youth Board reported on the close-out of the Nassau County grant. The grant was awarded to foster collaborative efforts within the IAC to better serve the humanitarian needs of the Glen Cove community. Following a satisfactory report of its success, Castro was optimistic that it would be renewed. Dr. Susan P. Moor, director of guidance for the Glen Cove School District and vice president of IAC and chair of communications, distributed the newly published and expanded IAC Membership Directory and Local Services. Dr. Moor publicly thanked Kevin Lohrius of Glen Cove Printery for his professional assistance with the printing of the directory. The 56-page directory is a comprehensive listing of all 48 member agencies serving the Glen Cove community, including addresses, phone numbers, and a brief description of services offered. A copy of the directory is available for viewing at all 48 agencies and copies are available at the Glen Cove Library.

Victoria Crosby, chair of Fund Development reported on the success of the "Beatles" Concert at the Wunsch Art Center in November. Juan Castro, chair of the Technology (Web Site) gave a presentation of the design concept for the Glen Cove IAC Website soon to be available. The contemporary design of triangles assembling as a whole with each triangle representing a human service category will literally be a double click away. Examples include: Physical Health, Multi-cultural, education, spiritual, housing and so on. The theme of the Web site is "working together to better serve the Glen Cove Community." The IAC Website was designed by Website University, a Florida institute whose students specialize in developing and maintaining web sites. Castro's efforts on behalf of IAC's Website was generously praised.

The IAC meetings conclude with each agency sharing news about upcoming events, community activities and at this meeting there was an appeal from the Rev. Betsy Simpson for volunteers at the homeless shelter housed in the First Presbyterian Church. This shelter is an outgrowth of the collaborative efforts of the IAC to provide this human service especially during the winter months. Overnight housing is provided for homeless males, approximately 15 individuals, who are provided with supper, a place to sleep and breakfast.
