IAC Members Announced New Programs and Events

The IAC's January meeting was opened by IAC president Dr. Daniel Vogrin, executive director of the Melillo Center for Mental Health by thanking Anthony Marotta, Jr., executive director for the Glen Cove Housing Authority for hosting the meeting. Marotta was invited by Dr. Vogrin to briefly highlight the services of the Housing Authority to the IAC membership in attendance. The Housing Authority is responsible for 250 units. Renovations and maintenance work is planned, which will include the re-location of mail boxes to the exterior of the unit. It is believed this will reduce vandalism. There has been an increase in non-scheduled police patrols and a contract has been signed with the Glen Cove Committee Against Substance Abuse, Inc. to specifically provide substance abuse preventive services. Marotta added this should help reduce substance abuse problems in the area. He also mentioned that the Community Center has had an increase in usage and the Thursday Food Pantry is popular. A grant from HUD will initiate testing for lead and asbestos.

Claudia Pagan, member services manager for Girl Scouts of Nassau County, Inc., followed the Housing Authority presentation with a request for a volunteer Activity Coordinator for the four Girl Scout Troops who meet at the Housing Authority Community Center. Anyone interested should contact her at 741-2550 ext. 225.

Committee reports were made starting with Arlene O'Dell, executive director of The Center for Parents and Children, and IAC treasurer. A discussion ensued as to plans for contacting local fraternal organizations for contributions to the IAC's collaborative effort of providing human services to the community. Dr. Susan Moor, director of guidance for the Glen Cove School District and chair of the communications committee reminded attendees that the recently published comprehensive Membership Directory and listings of Local Services is available at all 48 member agencies as well as at the Glen Cove Public Library. The IAC's Website will be up and running shortly. Stay tuned for the announcement by Website chair Juan Castro, executive director of the Glen Cove Youth Board.
