IAC Executive Board Installed by Mayor Thomas Suozzi

Dr. Daniel Vogrin, executive director of Melillo Center and president of IAC opened the June meeting, held at North Shore University Hospital's (NSUH) Community House by thanking John Imhof, Ph.D, vice president, Behavioral Health Services for hosting the meeting. The monthly meetings of the IAC provides a forum for the hosting member, in this case NSUH's Community House, to update and inform IAC members of any additions or changes to their existing programs, and to share with members their accomplishments, concerns or problems that require addressing in the community. As a result IAC monthly meetings provide an on-going updating and review human services available to residents of the City of Glen Cove. It is also the goal of IAC to highlight human service programs in the community through press releases garnered from these monthly meetings.

Dr. John Imhof, welcomed IAC members to NSUH's Community House and spoke briefly of the variety of programs it provides to the community. He then invited the directors of the programs to present a brief summary of the services they offer. IAC members heard from Adolescent Wellness, under the direction of Jodi Newman; Adolescent Day Treatment for ages 13-18 under the direction of Bob Savitt; Dual Diagnosis for ages 18 and above under the direction of Mark DeRiccio; and Dr. Alyssa Mallow's Women's and Children's Program. In addition an update on NSUH's Inpatient Psychiatric Unit (3 West), Outpatients Detox and Outpatient Treatment programs was presented.

The executive committee of IAC was honored to have The Honorable Mayor Thomas Suozzi install the officers for the year 2001-2002. Following the installation, Mayor Suozzi took the opportunity to express the City of Glen Cove's gratitude to IAC member agencies for the diverse human services they provide the City.

The IAC website has a new designer. Ilona Berzups of The Next Page a local website company was introduced by Juan Castro, executive director of Glen Cove Youth Board, and member-at-large for IAC. Ms. Berzups outlined the range of websites services that are available. Once up and running, the website will present a comprehensive profile of each member agency as well as information that is presently available in the annual membership directory.

Topics for next year's meetings were discussed. IAC's membership of 48 local human service agencies is a significant number yet it was noted that only a small number of religious organizations are members. The discussion led to a plan to reach out to these organizations to participate in IAC. Topics for IAC's coming year were offered by Bob Savitt, who will furnish IAC with an update of mandated JACO seminar offerings that covering a wide diversity of subjects including: services for ethnic populations, age specific issues, family therapy and parenting, as well as mental health issues. Dr. Susan Moor, director of Guidance for Glen Cove School District and vice president of IAC made a suggestion that all new social workers hired by the School District attend a meeting of IAC in the fall to become familiar with the community based services and programs. She also mentioned a third annual membership directory will be published in the fall.

Carol Rubin, Friends of the Library, updated the meeting on the new addition to the library, the need for additional membership and fundraising. Victoria Crosby, director of Glen Cove Mentoring Program and member-at- large of IAC, reminded everyone of the Friday night Jazz concerts in July and the Morgan Park Summer Music Festival beginning July 1st. Jean Hersey, president of Dr. Alberta Hersey Foundation, Inc., commented on the restoration of the Calvary AME cemetery, which received an extended write up in Newsday.

The IAC with 48 member agencies was established in 1971. The primary mission is to enhance the delivery of human services through collaboration and communication, and to provide mutual support among community agencies through sharing and networking. Member agencies are encouraged to have a representative attend the monthly meetings. The next meeting is planned for September 12, 2001, at 9 a.m. hosted by the Melillo Center.
