City of Glen Cove’s IAC Members Showcased Their Agencies

Dr. Daniel Vogrin, president of IAC, and executive director of the Melillo Center opened the recent meeting at City Hall, by welcoming the members and introducing Anzelmo Graziosi, deputy mayor, who said a few words on behalf of Nassau County Executive, elect, and Glen Cove’s Mayor, Thomas R. Suozzi. There were many voices of congratulations for the mayor on winning the recent election. Appropriately, the agenda for the meeting was a showcase for IAC member agencies, who are also Glen Cove City employees and have their offices at City Hall.

Juan Castro, executive director of the Glen Cove Youth Board spoke first with an overview of his agency. He also distributed newly published brochures and pamphlets outlining the diverse array of services to youth offered by the agency. Tina Hament, director of Human Resources for the City of Glen Cove, also provided the IAC membership with an overview of the City’s labor and employment policies. Completing the presentation was Dr. Sharon Harris, executive director of Glen Cove Citizens Committee Against Substance Abuse, pronounced (ja-casa) GCCCASA. Harris shared with the group her opportunity to have worked at City Hall while pursuing both her masters degree as well as a doctorate. The name of her agency explains its services, which meet the needs of a broad segment of the community including: an in-home mother and pre-school child, counseling and education to youth and adults, among other services. Harris also has a brochure available to the public stating the agency’s comprehensive services.

Dr. Vogrin expressed his appreciation to the presenters adding that each agency has a responsibility to keep all the other 48 agencies, who are members of the IAC, informed of all their services. This led to an informative lecture on the IAC’s website, which is a work in progress and is on a daily basis becoming more and more effective as a communication tool between the agencies and the public-at-large. Dr. Vogrin went on to say how the collaborative efforts of the Glen Cove’s IAC is a model for other communities and encouraged all member agencies to utilized today’s technology to its fullest potential. The public is encouraged to become familiar with the broad array of human services offered by IAC by logging on to the website at IACGlenCove.org

Several new members were welcomed at the November meeting they are the Reverend Douglas W. Hutchings, Rector of Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church, who gave an informative talk on the variety of programs and services offered by the Church. In addition, Rabbi Jonathan Kohn, of Congregation Tifereth Israel, a long time member of the IAC was welcomed as the temple's representative.

The IAC with 48 member agencies was established in 1971. The primary mission is to enhance the delivery of human services through collaboration and communication, and to provide mutual support among community agencies through sharing and networking. Member agencies are encouraged to have a representative attend the monthly meetings. The next meeting planned is for December 12, 2001, at 9 a.m. at Steam Boat Landing Restaurant.
