INN Representatives Speak at IAC Meeting

IAC Photo The April meeting of InterAgency Council of Glen Cove, Ltd, was hosted by Sunrise Assisted Living. Executive Director, Carolynn Dubicke, provided an overall description of the facility, its focus for the elderly in residence and the myriad of services provided. She pointed out that the Sunrise facility was a component of the revitalization of Glen Cove, and was one of 187 such facilities across the country. Sunrise residents range in age from 67 to 97 with the average of 82. Staff is available 24 hours a day and the third floor houses a state-of-the-art Alzheimer’s disease unit that caters to the very special needs of this resident. Dr. Vogrin, president of IAC, expressed the memberships appreciation, which was followed by a lively question and answer period.

Bob Adams, president of the Interfaith Nutritional Network, (INN) along with Lorraine Longo and Ellen Franck, also of the INN’s volunteer staff, spoke next. The INN’s Soup Kitchen provides a hot lunch on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday each week to approximately 75 guests. The INN’s services are made possible by donations and support from many local churches, local businesses, and financial donations and are operated by an all-volunteer staff of 110. Bob Adams added, “Many of the volunteers are retirees who reside in Glen Cove.” The Soup Kitchen is located at the First Baptist Church. Ms. Longo a retired ESL teacher and Ms. Frank a social worker told the members of their involvement with the Sheltering Program at First Presbyterian Church. A stumbling block in moving forward with the clientele is communication and the lack of Spanish-speaking volunteers. Dr. Susan Moor, director of Guidance for Glen Cove Schools indicated she many have a Spanish-speaking colleague who may wish to volunteer.

Grants have been submitted to AOLTimeWarner and Glen Cove’s CDA requesting funding for maintenance, training and future growth of IAC’s Website. The Website is a comprehensive listing of all IAC members with phone, fax and e-mail as well as a brief description of the services the agency provides to the community. While members are actively utilizing the Website, the community-at-large are encouraged to log on to the Website as agency events and updates are listed. IAC’s web mistress Ilona Berzups of The Next Page will be offering the membership a 2-hour kick-off workshop as an introduction to becoming more skilled in tapping into the complexities of the Internet and e-mail as a vital tool in today’s work place. More technology training for IAC’s membership will take place as funding is secured.

IAC collaboration included the Senior Center’s outreach to high school students to participate in a fundraiser planned by the Center. Carol Waldman, executive director of the Center announced workshops are being planned for young and elderly women to address “what it means to be female in today’s society.” Dr. Susan Moor, IAC’s vice president and director of guidance at Glen Cove School District encouraged the community to attend “Meet the Candidates Night,” at the High School on May 14 at 7:30 p.m. In addition, she urged everyone to get out and vote for the school budget on May 21st. Father Hutchings, rector of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, North Shore Clergy Association and the City of Glen Cove will host a Community Memorial Day Service on Sunday, May 26 at 3 p.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.

IAC with more than 40 member agencies was established in 1971. The primary mission is to enhance the delivery of human services through collaboration and communication, and to provide mutual support among community agencies through sharing and networking. Please visit our website at www.iacglencove.org for more information about services, events, and our member agencies. Member agencies are encouraged to have a representative attend the monthly meetings. The next meeting will take place on May 8, 2002, at 9 a.m. hosted by Congregation Tifereth Israel.
