Juan Castro, president of IAC opened the December meeting by thanking The Reverend Douglas Hutchings, Rector of Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church who hosted the final meeting of the year. The Reverend Hutchings also serves on IAC’s board of directors as corresponding secretary. He provided the IAC membership with an in-depth overview of the community services provided by the Church to the Glen Cove community at large. These services include 30 separate groups that utilize the Church and it auxiliary buildings that includes management of cemetery. The parishioners also contribute to the food bank at St. Rocco’s, provide clothing to the needy, operate a Thrift Shop as well as a Nursery School. Father Hutchings also invited the membership to visit the sanctuary to view the major restoration recently completed, especially the restoring of the extraordinary stained glass windows.
Juan Castro introduced guest speaker George Siberón, Executive Director Nassau County Youth Board, and commented on their friendship of many years. Siberón complimented the IAC on the success of its model organization based on its mission “to enhance the delivery of human services through collaboration and communication, and to provide mutual support among community agencies through sharing and networking.” The re-organization and re-vitalization of IAC over the past several years is the result of an annual grant from the Nassau County Youth Bureau. Grants were made to local human service organizations throughout Nassau County to establish collaborative partnerships within their communities in order to better serve their constituents.
According to Siberón the success of collaborative efforts are well documented and opportunities to mobilize and advocate for community resources from the state, federal and county requires the commitment as well as vigilance of dedicated community leaders. He added that in his view, IAC’s model program, clearly demonstrates its obligation to procure adequate human service resources in order to improve the quality if life for the citizens of Glen Cove.
The next meeting will take place on Wednesday, January 8, 2003, at 9 a.m. hosted by Glen Cove Public Library. For additional information on IAC please log on to our Website at www.iacglencove.org.
