IAC Photo Photo (L to R): Maija Sperauskas, executive director, Glen Cove Public Library, Dr. Susan Moor, guidance director for Glen Cove Schools and IAC member-at-large; Ilona Berzups president and CEO, The Next Page; The Reverend Betsy Simpson, First Presbyterian Church and Juan Castro, president of IAC and executive director of Glen Cove Youth Board.
Juan Castro, president of IAC opened the January meeting by thanking Maija Sperauskas, the new executive director of the Glen Cove Public Library the host of the meeting. He also reminded members that Nassau County Legislator Brian Muellers would be the guest speaker at Wednesday, February 5, 2003 meeting. Castro invited Sperauskas to give an overview of the newly renovated meeting rooms at the Library. In the past, prior to the start of the renovations, the Library was the regular meeting place for IAC’s monthly meeting. Sperauskas welcomed the IAC back and suggested that any agency wishing to hold meetings should contact Amy Mondello to make arrangements. After discussing the renovations, Sperauskas introduced her staff, each of whom provided an overview of their departments. She also reminded the IAC members that for the first time residents will vote on the Library budgets and elect trustees on April 8, 2003.

Castro asked Sperauskas what challenges lay ahead for the Library. She spoke of a questionnaire being circulated in the community that would provide the Library staff with guidance and be utilized to identify the community’s wishes and concerns. Moreover, she stated the Library is disappointed in its efforts to attract the Hispanic population to utilize the resources of the Library, citing transportation as possible issue. Pat Blanco of La Fuerza Unida offered assistance.

Ilona Berzups from The Next Page, IAC’s Webmaster, discussed up coming workshops planned for members of IAC and their colleagues. Pat Blanco will soon schedule Spanish class that will be open to IAC members. The Glen Cove Senior Center will hold a Senior Fair on Tuesday, February 25, 2003.

The next meeting will take place on Wednesday, February 5, 2003, at 9 a.m. hosted by the Holocaust Memorial & Education Center of Nassau County, 100 Crescent Beach Road, Glen Cove with guest speaker Nassau County Legislator, Brian Muellers.
