The InterAgency Council (IAC) held its November meeting at the Glen Cove Court Room. The meeting was hosted by IAC’s vice president, Dr. Sharon Harris, executive director of GCCCASA. Dr. Harris introduced Judge McCord, as a colleague, in the field of substances abuse and at risk youth and their families. Judge McCord, explained the services provided by the court and those that do not. He spoke with pride of the court’s involvement with the youth of the community including the monthly “court reality” program that involves the schools in the area. Students familiarize themselves with court proceedings, visit a jail, and as Judge McCord explained, “Anytime a youth is ordered to appear in court, it is an extremely frightening experience for them. And, that is as it should be.” The courts works with the guidance departments in the school districts, with the parents, with GCCCASA and other community organizations in an effort to make sure that youth at risk as given the support and services they need.
The next meeting of IAC will take place on Wednesday, December 3, 2003 at 9 a.m. at the Marquis Care Center, 2 Medical Plaza, Glen Cove, 516-671-0858. Special guests’ speakers are Brian Muellers and Diane Yatauro of the Nassau County Legislator.
