InterAgency Council of Glen Cove held its monthly meeting on Wednesday, May 11, 2005 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. The primary mission of IAC is to enhance the delivery of human services through collaboration and communication, and to provide mutual support among community agencies through sharing and networking.
Sharon E. Harris, Ph.D, president of IAC thanks, Father Hutchings, rector of St. Paul’s for hosting the breakfast introduced the first of three speakers Donna Ceravolo, Executive Director/CEO, Girls Scouts of Nassau County, Inc. Ms. Ceravolo provided an overview of the challenges young girls face in today’s society. She covered the influences of dress, the media, teasing and bullying that permeate the lives of young girls today based on extensive research conducted by the Girl Scouts of America. She spoke of some new innovative programming to be introduced by the Girl Scout movement to counteract some of the negative behaviors that are so prevalent. A lively question and answer period followed.
Father Hutchings was invited to speak and gave an overview of the extensive renovation and restoration work that has been accomplished since he came to St. Paul’s, including that done in the Great Hall, where the meeting took place. He was proud of the number of local agencies that use the renovated board room at the Church for their meetings, and added that the Girls Scout met at St. Paul’s. In addition, extensive work has taken place in the graveyard and in the sanctuary.
The final speaker of the day was Donald Scarl, president of the Coalition for Glen Cove. Mr. Scarl explained how the coalition’s main focus is to bring information about the Glen Cove Schools to the community, encourage voters to support the public schools and to support effective candidates for the Glen Cove School Board. With the school budget coming up for a vote on May 17, he encouraged everyone to spread the word to get out the vote.
The president thanked all the speakers and encouraged the membership to attend the First Annual Conference and Honoree Breakfast planned for Wednesday, June 15, at 8:30 a.m. at The Metropolitan. Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi will keynote the conference followed by George Siberon, Nassau County Youth Bureau, executive director, who will speak on “Gang Intervention. IAC will honor Daniel J. Vogrin Ph.D., executive director of the Melillo Center for his many years as president of IAC, for his vision and guidance over the past decade. InterAgency Council of Glen Cove was established in 1971 to improve the delivery of human services through cooperation, communication and coordination of community agencies. The original concept for IAC was developed under the auspices of the Community Hospital of Glen Cove as part of a University based community service project. Twenty of the original agencies continue active participation. Monthly meetings are held every second Wednesday of the month September through June at member agency settings.
